"When experiencing UV Hippo live, jam band fans are quickly reminded why they fell in love with the genre’s sound in the first place"

"All told, UV Hippo provides hope for the future of jam bands and the jam scene"

-Marquee Magazine

Jeffrey Smith

"Hippo came out and owned the stage from start to finish.  They were giving it their all and it showed! There wasn’t a single song out of place. They had the most energy and the best jams out of any band there. Easily the best show of the festival!  UV Hippo left the stage in ruins"

"One of the things about this band that really separates them from the rest is their consistency. I have seen them with a pretty packed house as well as being one of about fifteen people in the audience; and they always bring the heat"

"With six members in the band, it’s incredibly important for each member to buy-in to what is being presented as a whole. This is not an issue with UV Hippo. The band gives space for each member to effectively communicate what he want to say, but the essence of totality is never lost."

"UV Hippo has revived my passion in seeing local acts over the past year and a half. When describing the band’s sound, explosive would be an understatement"

The shreddiest set of the weekend. As anyone who reads CJS knows, I fucking love Ultraviolet Hippopotamus. In fact, I don’t think love is even a strong enough word for how I feel about this band. Let me put it this way: it doesn’t matter whom they are up against at a festival, I will always choose UV Hippo. And I'm stoked I did because this was easily one of the best sets of music I saw all weekend.  The guys in the band, especially Brian, looked like they were having so much fun. That is one thing I absolutely love about this band—they really seem to be in this music thing for the sole purpose of blowing minds. This was obvious as the crowd was going completely apeshit the entire time, bouncing & jumping around like a bunch of spastic primates. There wasn’t a single person with even a portion of their face left. This set was an absolute explosion and left a crater the size of a football field filled with melted faces at the Campfire Stage. UM might bring the lightning, but UV Hippo brought the thunder this weekend.

“This Grand Rapids band does the groovy, experimental, jam-rock thing in a way that would make Frank Zappa proud.”

"I was pumped to see a whole slew of people crowding around the hill, ready to throw down with the Hippo. The band wasted no time and started pumping out those highly danceable, electro-progressive jams that have become signature to the UVH sound. I shit you not, these guys are serious, serious business. Their music is overflowing with these Frank Zappa and Garaj Mahal type fusion elements that are blended with the perfect amount of jamtronica to provide this unbelievable sensation that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. As I’ve said before, Sam and Russell give me the same sort of anticipatory feelings that I get when I’m watching Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss play. Each of them are guitar monsters just waiting to explode into some crazy string-shredding, neck-tapping madness that not one of us will be prepared for. When Frazier turned to me during “Cream Soda” with a bandana over his face, pumping his fists and convulsing his body, he confirmed the fact that UV Hippo was indeed bringing the heat. Everyone around us was dancing and grooving with this scrunched up look on their face, wondering what sort of soundwaves were successfully infiltrating their minds and bodies, but unable to do anything about it. I could tell they were hooked… just like I was the first time I heard them. When it was all said and done, the crowd was in an uproar and the Hippo had done it again. Coming from Michigan, I have been spoiled rotten with opportunities to see Ultraviolet Hippopotamus and every single time I have ever seen them, they’ve played with just as much energy and vigor as the time before. Day in and day out, this band reminds me why they continue to be one of my favorite jam bands on the circuit. I love UV Hippo."
